Navigate the start menu for Windows 10

Let’s have a little look at the new start menu for Windows 10. To see the steps with screen shots, click HERE.

How to: Navigate the start menu for Windows 10

  1. Click on the Window on the bottom left of your taskbar.
  2. On the left you will see applications that you regularly use (this will be different for each computer). You will notice a little arrow on the right of the icon, this jump list will take you to recently visited places (for search engines) or recently used files/documents.
  3. On the bottom left you have:
    1. File Explorer (the window to navigate to documents, photos etc.)
    2. Settings (We used this button in the last blog post to get to the default programs, it also includes: devices – eg. Add a printer, personalization – eg. change the screen saver etc.)
    3. Power (hopefully you have found this button by now to turn your computer off)
    4. All apps
  4. When you click on All apps, the left of the start menu displays all of the applications on your computer. Scroll through alphabetically to find the application you require.
  5. The right of the start menu are applications that have been pinned to the start menu (much like in Windows 8.1 where you could pin frequently used applications without searching through all of the applications (the arrow at the bottom). Notice the scroll bar on the right, some of the applications are hidden under the taskbar.
  6. If you would like to remove one of the pinned applications, right-click on the tile then select Unpin from Start.
  7. The tile is then removed and a blank space is left.
  8. To add a tile to the start menu, click on All apps, find the application you would like to pin then right click.
  9. Click on Pin to Start.
  10. The application is placed at the bottom of the start menu.
  11. To move the application up to the top (or to reorder the individual applications), click and hold your mouse down and move it to a different position.
  12. The applications are in groups. If you want to move one of the groups, click and hold your mouse down on the header of the group and drag to another spot.
  13. You can change the names of the group also by clicking on the lines beside the title and typing a new name.
  14. You can also change the size of the tiles. Right click on one of the tiles, select Resize then the size you would like the tile.
  15. If you want to change the size of your start menu, for example, make your start menu shorter (from the top) or wider (from the right), to do this, hover over the edge of the menu until you see a double ended arrow then click and drag.
